Nurse (Somalia- Wajid and Hudur)

Scope of Responsibility:

The Nurse will be responsible for care and medical follow-up of the patients in the centre. Assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. Administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients. May advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide case management.

The Nurse reports hierarchically and technically to the MCH Supervisor. The Nurses will be based in Somalia-Two in Wajid and one in Hudur.

Objective 1: Medical/nutritional supervision of patients
Ensure that the needed material is ready before starting daily activities;
Ensure the medical examinations at the admission time and on a regular basis (this step is compulsory to approve the admissions);
Prescribe the appropriate medication and make sure it is administrated according to the stipulated protocols;
Direct the patients to the phase corresponding to their medical state ;
Define the frequency of clinical examinations in the phases ;
Check that the nutritional helpers take care of the patients ;
Analyse the data collected and note down any errors ;
When being discharged, do a clinical examination and check that the criteria are met and that the immunization is satisfactory.
Produce regular progress reports to the supervisor.

Objective 2: Manage the pharmacy and medical materials
Ensure efficient management of the ward pharmacy and medical equipment: drug and material orders, stock follow-up, storage conditions, inventories, follow-up of expired drugs and their return to the central pharmacy
Ensure the correct dis infection and sterilisation of material, linen and premises according to Action Against Hunger Protocol.
Prepare the orders
Manage the pharmacy: check expiration date, make adjustments;
Ensure the pharmacy is never out of stock;
Draft a medical consumption report.

Objective 3: Participate in health education
Welcome anyone coming to the centres and treat them with respect;
Give advices to the accompanying person and the beneficiaries during the medical examination (how to take drugs)
Promote optimal infant & young child feeding practices among the accompanying people;
Define with the team the health training needed and fulfil it.
Participate in stimulating the patients (early-learning activities)

Objective 4: Team work and equipment management
Train the team about hygiene rules, prescriptions and medical supervision ;
Take care of maintenance & cleaning of medical equipment;
Request to the supervisor the needed material on a monthly basis;
Keep organised and clean the box used for OTP/SFP;

Objective 5: Reporting to the supervisor:
Make reports on a regular basis (daily / weekly / monthly)
Report problems encountered to the supervisor

Objective 6: General Knowledge of Action Against Hunger and Safety at work
Co-operation with the colleagues of own and other departments
Is aware of activities of other departments and respect specific rules and procedures
Comply with the health and safety rules related to the job for the sites.
Ensure all staff supervised by him/her comply with the health and safety rules / instructions of the supervisor related to the job.
Respect medical ethics at all times

Objective 7: General nursing
Provide nursing care according to the prescription.
Control vital signs such as Blood Pressure, Temperature, Pulse and Respiratory rate. Analyse the results and respond accordingly.
Correctly fill in patient files; record vital signs; findings etc;
Assess, follow up and evaluate the condition of all admitted patients, and inform the Supervisor/Consultant or Medical Doctor if any problem or deterioration in the patient's condition.


Assist the medical doctor/consultant during the in-patient rounds.


Assist the medical doctor/CO when interviewing and examining patients if needed.


Ensure that the in-patients receive food.


Give general health education to patient/caretakers if needed


Inform the patients/caretakers about the treatment and medication given, and ensure that the message is understood.


Ensure that the patient gets the medication prescribed


Follow up patients that are not present during the Ward or medication rounds.


Collect drugs in the pharmacy, if necessary.


Prepare the trolley for the medical round.


Distribute the medications prescribed and confirm the following; right patient, right time, right dosage, right Drug; right administration route and check the expire date of the drug.

Position Requirements

Degree /Diploma in nursing

Skills & Experience
Previous work experience in the field of humanitarian, under the scope of nursing
Good understanding of the Somali and English language
Prior experience in Somalia or other relevant conflict / crisis situation a strong plus.

Competencies: Precision and Exactitude. Good capacity to work in a team, flexibility. Good relations and ability to communicate with others. Know the different sign of malnutrition.

Personal qualities: Organization skills, rigor, flexibility, ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural people, open-minded, good communication skills, ability to listen, diplomacy
