Raytheon Polar Services - Experience AntarcticaSeeking a unique adventure as well as employment How would you like to be one of the few people on the planet to have the opportunity to live and work in Antarctica Raytheon Polar Services is the primary contractor for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) U.S. Antarctic Program. We are currently looking for Medic to deploy to McMurdo, South Pole or Palmer research stations on a contract basis beginning in October of 2009.
There are three lengths for the contracts: Summer-(Approximately) October through February, Winter-(Approximately) February through October, and Year-Long-(Approximately) October through October. We are looking for Primary and Alternate employees to fill all contract positions. The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs primary care, patient evaluation and treatment in deep field settings.
Assumes off-hours and night call functions as required.
Administers and dispenses pharmaceuticals and general medical supplies and logs usage. Recommends resupply and changes to formularies.
Works with Camp Supervisor to provide safety orientation for all new personnel, plan and conduct disaster drills, and Search and Rescue trainings.
Works under the direction of the USAP’s Medical Director and lead physician at the McMurdo Medical Clinic. Maintains a professional and clinical relationship with the staff at the McMurdo Medical Clinic.
In the event of a work related injury, the field camp medic must contact the McMurdo Medical clinic as soon as possible and transmit a basic medical report. The McMurdo medical clinic would be responsible for initiating and completing a Medical Incident Report Form (MIRF).
Handles confidential matters (patient records, personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and medical professional standards. Good verbal communication skills required.
Complies with quality assurance programs.
Maintains clinical medical records and provides input into the patient database.
Provides input into annual summary reports with recommendations for future health care facility capabilities.
Completes end of season report according to SOP.
Implements USAP's safety, environmental and health programs.
Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
Interacts with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.

Required Experience
High School diploma or equivalent required.
EMT-Intermediate, EMT-Paramedic or higher certification is required.
Minimum of three years experience as an EMT-Paramedic, EMT Intermediate or higher certification is required.
A well-rounded outdoors background and demonstrated ability to work in remote and isolated environments, as a team player, is required.
Preferred Experience
Experience with remote medical practices is required and Wilderness EMT (WEMT) or Wilderness ALS (WALS) is highly recommended.
Experience in the following areas is preferred: outdoor education, cold weather or high altitude camping, mountain guiding in glacial environments, remote field sites, work in an Arctic/Antarctic field camp, and/or extensive work and participation in expeditions.
Additional Polar Information
Contract compensation includes reimbursement of expenses to physically qualify, weekly salary, travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance based bonus upon successful completion of your contract.
