Description:
An emergency medical technician, or EMT, is the primary caregiver before an injured or ill person arrives at a hospital. EMTs usually work closely with paramedics, who have more extensive training in emergency medical services.
The EMT drives to the scene, provides initial emergency care, determines the most suitable medical facility for the patient and transports the individual there.
At the scene, EMTs perform patient assessment, determining the nature and extent of injury or illness. They check for medical alert bracelets or necklaces, and any medication the person is carrying.
EMTs provide basic life support, which may include airway management, ventilation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an automatic defibrillator.
