In Kenya, Malteser International is present since 2001. So far, programs concentrated on TB/HIV and Maternal and Neonatal health in the slums of Nairobi and in Kajiado, while also providing humanitarian assistance in emergencies such as droughts and floods in Northern Kenya.

In August 2012, Malteser International opened an office in Illeret, North Horr Sub-County, Marsabit County / Northern Kenya with the aim to address the needs of the pastoralist population of the area, by supporting sustainable solutions, drought resilience, disaster preparedness and later (2015) primary health care.

To support our program in Illeret, Marsabit County, Kenya, Malteser International is looking for a motivated

Health Officer (national position)

Responsibilities:

Ø Overall: The position holder will be responsible for the coordination of the Illeret Primary Health Project, this role will be pivotal in increasing access to primary health care and nutritional services that are particularly responsive to the needs of women and children in Illeret ward.

Ø Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the project’s Maternal Child health and Nutrition interventions

Ø In collaboration with partners, conduct regular reviews of the progress and performance of the activities to identify gaps and delays, and implement effective solutions

Ø Develop strong relationships with the designated community groups in the 13 villages of Illeret Ward

Ø Collaborate with Illeret Health Facility staff, the North Horr Sub-County Health Management team and relevant stakeholders for improved health outcomes

Ø Manage the performance based reimbursement scheme for health care workers, Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) and Community Birth Companions (CBCs)

Ø Implement and evaluate all health related capacity building activities

Ø Ensuring increased utilization and demand for primary health care and nutrition services through innovative community health and awareness activities

Ø Actively maintain Malteser International’s reputation as a key health partner in North Horr Sub-County through representation in stakeholder conferences, workshops and other forums

Ø Prepares accurate and timely technical reports on a monthly and bi-annual basis for all project related activities showing achievements against targets

Ø Reports to Program Coordinator Illeret and Health Program Manager Kenya

Qualifications:

Ø Bachelor Degree / Higher National Diploma in Public Health, Nursing, Clinical Medicine or other health related course.

Ø Minimum 3-4 years of field experience in Kenyan ASALs (arid and semi-arid lands)

Ø Additional training in Maternal and child health will be an added advantage

Ø Knowledge and experience in development work is an asset.

Ø Fully computer literate (Microsoft Office) and good working knowledge of ITC/ICT technologies

Ø Fluency in English and Kiswahili (written and spoken), Knowledge of Dassanach is of advantage

Ø Ability and willingness to work in physically challenging field conditions

Conditions:

Ø Starting date: as soon as possible

Ø Duty Station: Illeret, Marsabit County, Kenya

Ø Duration of contract: 12 months

Ø Salary according to qualification and experience, insurance package
