BACKGROUND

Since its foundation in 1968, GRT (Group for Transcultural Relations) has been working with socially marginalized groups and individuals by setting up protection mechanisms in order to promote social inclusion.

GRT is active in Kenya and Somalia since 1996, where the main fields of intervention are: Community Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Protection (GBV and Street Children) and (forced) Migrations, being expression of GRT’s core areas of expertise.

GRT works mainly with professionals such as psychologists, social workers, anthropologists, medical practitioners, social scientists, teachers for the development of culturally and economically sustainable interventions in line with the organization’s mission.

In Somaliland/Somalia GRT is de facto the only International NGO committed to the development of the mental health sector and in support of the rights of persons with mental health problems, with continuity. Over the years GRT has trained mental health professionals, opened the first public Mental Health Facility in Puntland, supported the development of a 100% chain-free mental health department at the public Hospital in hargeisa, supported the Somaliland Ministry of Health in the promulgation of the first ever Mental Health policy. Thousands of persons with mental health problems and their families have benefited the public, and also private, services supported and ameliorated thanks to GRT intervention and the conscious mediation between different therapeutic powers in the field.

Within the framework of GRT Mental Health activities, the organization seeks to fill the position of Project Manager.

Key responsabilities

Management level


Activities planning, prioritization, implementation and monitoring in adherence with the agreed work plan;


Overall administrative supervision in coordination with project administrator, headquarters and partners;


Narrative reports on progresses and analysis of project state of the art, preparatory draft for financial reports


Coordination with partners and local counterparts

Technical level (mental health)


Capacity building and technical orientation to local staff, in continuity and support with the planned technical consultancy and trainings;


On-the-job training and supervision of local staff (within hospital and during home visits), to strengthen psychosocial rehabilitation plans;


Support to proposal writing.

Networking level


Active participation in local and regional working groups and clusters;


Maintaining good relations with donors and institutional counterparts and stakeholders ;


Promotion of project activities at institutional and informal networks.

Essential Requirements


Experience managing international development programs (3-5 years)


Professional experience in Mental Health


Bachelor/Master’s Degree in Social Sciences (Psychology, Anthropology, Human Science for education)


Demostrated training capacity


Spoken and written fluency in English (knowledge of Somali is an asset)


Capable of working pro-actively and independently, while being an excellent leader of multi-disciplinary teams;


Ability to work effectively and calmly under pressure


Ability to adapt to uncomfortable environments and situations


Honesty and transaprency


Negotiation capacity


Excellent computer literacy

Desiderable requirements


Masters/ professional courses on Mental Health/ethnopsychiatry/Transcultural Psychiatry


Fluency in Italian is highly desirable


Previous working experience in Horn of Africa or East Africa
