The Clinical Mentor will provide embedded mentorship directly to
primary health centers and district hospitals towards the goal of
self-sufficient and self-sustaining HIV/AIDS care and treatment centers.
The physician-mentor, nurse-mentor, and counselor-mentor will work side
by side with clinical staff to establish and/or improve the quality of
HIV prevention, care, and treatment services as well as increase the
efficiency of HIV clinic management. The Clinical Mentor will be in a
position to dramatically influence care and expand access to
comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment.
Responsibilities:
*Work with and rotate through select primary health centers and district
hospitals within Mashonaland Central Province to establish and/or
improve prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV services and
to improve the identification and follow-up care of at-risk and
HIV-positive pregnant women as
well as their HIV-exposed and
HIV-infected children
*Teach and mentor staff in the didactic and practical matters of PMTCT,
antenatal care, anti-retroviral treatment, and HIV-exposed infant care.
*Provide daily on-site, PMTCT-related support and mentoring to staff at
primary health centers and district hospitals on improved quality
management of prevention, care, and treatment, including clinical care
practices, documentation, operating procedures, human resources
management, stock management, communications, etc
*Assess and identify gaps in PMTCT service provision and clinical
operations; support the development and implementation of actionable
plans to improve service provision and clinic operations
*Score performance based on standardized checklists and track mentee and
clinic performance improvements over time
*Help introduce new policies and care practices, as needed
*Report to the PMTCT Program Coordinator and maintain constant
communication with provincial and national MOH counterparts
Qualifications:
*Educational background relevant to position required
*License to practice as nurse midwife in Zimbabwe required
*Certifications or additional training in new technical guidelines and
recognized best practices preferred
*At least 3 years experience in providing direct PMTCT care and/or ARV
treatment to HIV positive infants, children and adults in Zimbabwe
*Prior experience in mentoring preferred
**Fluency in English and Shona required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
*Strong technical knowledge and experience with PMTCT, antenatal care,
and anti-retroviral therapy and new WHO and Zimbabwe treatment
guidelines
*Management and leadership experience in a well-run HIV clinic
*Ability to undertake the training of adult learners
*Understanding of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system
*Comfortable working at all levels of the healthcare system
*Respect for the political process and protocols involved in government programs
*Ability to multi-task and work effectively in high-pressure situations with minimal supervision
*Excellent organizational and planning skills
*Excellent communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills
*Commitment to a team approach in the clinic
*Ability to work with others and provide instruction and correction in a spirit of togetherness and affirmation
*Willingness to live close to mentored sites in low-resource settings with frequent local travel
*Moderate level of proficiency in relevant computer applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Access
